Buet authorities, students vow to fight terrorism, communal forces
The students also vowed to take a stance against corruption, injustice and discrimination on the campus
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology's (Buet) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Saiful Islam, director of Students' Welfare, provosts of different halls and general students have vowed to fight terrorism and communal forces on the campus.
The announcement came from an oath taking ceremony programme held at Buet auditorium today.
However, teachers did not take the oath as they were guests of the programme.
They also observed a minute of silence in remembrance of Abrar Fahad.
The protesting students organised the programme as part of their agitation started after the killing of Abrar Fahad by a group of Chhatra Leauge leaders and activists.
The students also vowed to take a stance against corruption, injustice and discrimination on the campus.
They promised to fulfil their part of responsibilities towards the university for the betterment of all.
Tithi, spokesperson of the movement, told The Business Standard that they want to eliminate all the evil forces from Buet campus.
"Our motto is to build a good academic atmosphere, where no students will be assaulted or harassed by anyone," she said.
Buet Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Saiful Islam said, "We lost a brilliant son and bagged a worst image in home and abroad.
We don't want to see such incident at Buet anymore. We are determined to eliminate all the terror activities from the campus."
On October 15, the students cancelled all the movement after nine days of protest except boycotting of exams and classes.
They will not attend any exam and class until all the accused of Abrar killing are expelled permanently from the Buet.
Abrar Fahad, a second-year-student of electrical and electronics engineering department of the Buet, was allegedly beaten to death by Chhatra League leaders in his dormitory – Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 6 night.
The incident triggered protest at Buet and other educational institutions.
