396 GPA-5 holders in JSC, SSC didn’t get GPA-5 in HSC

As many as 396 students, who carried GPA-5 in both JSC and SSC, have reportedly failed to secure the maximum grade point average in HSC results on Saturday.

On the other hand, a total of 17,043 candidates, who did not get GPA 5 in their SSC and JSC examinations, have been awarded with GPA-5 in HSC result this year.

Professor Nehal Ahmed, convener of Inter-Education Board Coordination Sub-Committee, said the students who had earlier achieved GPA-5 with the marks of fourth subject did not get GPA-5 in HSC this year.

Over the issue, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said many students usually lose their previous GPA due to their negligence in study and some other causes.

The number of such cases was higher in the previous years. Some 17371 students did not get GPA-5 in HSC in 2017 although they had GPA-5 in SSC and JSC. The number was 52678 in 2018 and 45835 in 2019.

This year, a stop-gap system of weighting the scores of the candidates' JSC and SSC exams was used to determine the HSC results.

Explaining the subject mapping method, Dipu Moni said the SSC results were weighted at 75 percent, on the basis of average scores in three subjects -- Bangla, English and ICT, while the JSC scores in the same subjects accounted for 25 percent of the final HSC grade for 2020.

"This issue of [students missing out on] the GPA-5 score happened due to subject mapping," she added.

After the mapping was done, the students did not get the scores needed to achieve a GPA-5.
