EC launches online NID services

The Election Commission on Monday started its online services to provide National Identity Cards amid the government  announced holidays to check the coronavirus pandemic.

Availing the online services, the service seekers can collect NID number, copy of NID card, correct and update information of NID cards, recollect NID card in case of losing it and apply for voter registration, said Director General of the EC's NID Registration Wing Brig Gen Saidul Islam at a online press conference.

He said the people will be able to avail the services visiting http://www.nidw.gov.bd/ and sending SMS to hotline number 105.

Hotline number 105 will remain open for the service seekers from 9am to 3pm on working days, he added.

The director general said a fresh voter enrolled during the latest updating programme can easily know his/her NID number through SMS.

In this case, the person will need to type nid<form no><dd-mm-yyyy> and then send it to 105. The service seeker will get the NID number in the reply message.

A total 67, 58, 341 people were registered in the latest electoral roll, published on March 2 last, he said.

Brig Gen Saidul Islam said the fresh voters can also collect online copy of NID visiting its website, which can be used in availing of services from banks, insurances and many other ogranisations.

He said those who want to be new voters can apply for registration online and attach their supportive documents with the application. But the biometrics of the applicants will be collected later as it needs physical presence of the service seekers.

On March 22, the EC suspended its NID services considering public safety amid the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country.
