DU to confer Doctor of Laws degree on Bangabandhu

The Dhaka University will confer Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with Honorary Doctor of Laws posthumously marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu.

The degree will be awarded to Bangabandhu marking the Mujib Year, said Vice Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman after a meeting at DU.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Nasrin Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Kamal Uddin, General Secretary of Dhaka University Teachers' Association Professor Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, Proctor Prof Golam Rabbani, Registrar Md Enamuzzaman and Secretary General of Dhaka University Alumni Association Ranjon Kormoker were present, among others, at the meeting.

The university will set up a research institute and erect a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to mark the occasion, said the VC.

"We will also arrange an international conference, essay competition to mark the occasion. A book named Bangabandhu and Dhaka University will be unveiled at that time", he added.

Bangabandhu, who was a student of law department at the university, was expelled for organising a demonstration in 1949 on the rights of the fourth grade staff.

Sixty-one years later, in 2010, the Dhaka University Syndicate rescinded the expulsion of Bangabandhu.
