Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury has also blamed police personnel for the Hefazat-e-Islam mayhem in Brahmanbaria district.

He made this allegation while responding to journalists after visiting the damaged Brahmanbaria Press Club on Saturday noon.

Earlier, Brahmanbaria-3 constituency (Sadar and Bijoynagar) MP and district Awami League President, RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury also blamed the administration for inaction.

The activists of Hefazat-e-Islam went berserk in Brahmanbaria during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh between 26 and 28 March.

They attacked the Jela Parishad, the district Awami League office, the press club, Land Office, municipality offices, and some other private organisations during the hartal. They also attacked Khatihata highway police station in Sarail.

A 14-member team led by Zafrullah Chowdhury visited the press club when its general secretary Jabed Rahim Bijan described the vandalism at the press club. Later, press club president Riazuddin Jami narrated the attack on him.

Zafrullah said, "It is astonishing to me that the Hefazat men set fire to police vehicles but maybe they (police) were asleep. Before I came to Brahmanbaria, police asked me various questions regarding my visit but they (police) did not even know about such a big incident involving Hefazat."

RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury has directly blamed the police personnel. "At this moment, I have nothing to say in this connection. But I am worried as Hefazat men carried out an attack at the press club, and it is a holy place like the mosque," he added.

Ganasanghati Andolan Chief Coordinator Junaid Saki, Bhasani Followers Council's secretary general Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, Presidium Member Naim Jahangir, Freedom Fighter Ishtiaq Aziz, and Barrister Sadia Arman, among others, were present during the visit.
