A cargo ship carrying 10,000 bags of cement sank in the Bhairab river near Fultala upazila of Khulna district after it was hit by another cargo ship on Tuesday morning.

The ship, MV AKM Shahnewaz, sunk due to a tear in its hull after the other ship, while turning around, hit it.

The Captain of MV AKM Shahnewaz, Md Kamaluddin, said that around 9am Tuesday, MV Kachurullah, which was carrying 16,000 bags of cement, was trying to make a turn in the river near the Shikirhat port in Fultala and hit his ship.

"This resulted in a tear in the hull of our ship and as a result, it sank with the 10,000 bags of cement. This has resulted in around Tk2 crore in losses."

Kamaluddin complained that the accident occurred because the captain of MV Kachurullah, Md Hasan, let crew member Md Faruk steer the ship instead of doing it himself.

Speaking about the matter, Md Hasan said, "I let Faruk turn the ship around instead of me doing it because I had pain in my hands."

Officer-in-Charge of Fultala Police Station Mohammad Monirul Islam said, "The captain of MV Shahnewaz has filed a complaint with us. We are currently investigating the matter."

Monirul said that legal actions would be taken after the investigation ended.
