Police have arrested a student of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).

The student reportedly hurt religious sentiment by provocative and indecent post on Facebook centring religion.

The arrestee, Saurav Chowdhury, 24, is the last year student of the Civil Engineering department of the university.

Police arrested him on early Sunday from his North Nalapara residence after Raozan Police Station's Sub Inspector Abu Bakkar Siddique filed a case last night with the police station under the Digital Security Act.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Raozan-Rangunia Circle) Md Anower Hossain Shamim confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

Professor Dr Rezaul Karim, director of the student welfare body of Cuet, said the accused student made a blasphemous comment on Facebook on 19 March.

Following the post, general students demanded that Saurav Chowdhury be suspended and legal action be taken against him as a screenshot of his Facebook post went viral.

"The issue will be discussed at the disciplinary committee meeting of the organisation," Rezaul Karim added.

Earlier, another student called Raihan Roman was expelled from the university in October last year for the same offence.
