Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has decided to host the "Dhaka International Marathon – 2021" around March next year.

DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh took the decision after meeting with officials from the Bangladesh Olympic Association, Bangladesh Athletic Federation and other concerned stakeholders at the Buriganga conference hall at Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka on Monday.

DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Taposh said, "We are going to organise this 42 to 45-kilometer-long international marathon in coordination with the concerned ministries, departments and other stakeholders of the government including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Bangladesh Athletic Federation and Bangladesh Olympic Association."

During the meeting, the people present proposed that the event be named 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Dhaka Marathon, 2021' (Dhaka Marathon -2021 in short) to highlight Dhaka City in the international arena marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 50-years of independence of Bangladesh.

The officials present also decided to change the date of the marathon to March 17 or 26 next year instead of December 16 based on recommendations from technical experts in the field and according to feedback from international and regional athletic organisations.

At the same time, detailed arrangements were made to form an organising committee and other sub-committees to ensure the smooth running of the marathon activities.

The officials present also reviewed some of the possible routes for the marathon and said that the route map would be finalised only after an on-the-spot inspection by the technical committee of the Asian Athletic Federation following the nomination of the International Olympic Association.

It was decided at the meeting that the 1st to 6th winners of the competition would be awarded 20, 15, 12, 10, 8 and 5 thousand US dollars respectively, and the rest of the contestants would be given certificates and medals.
