Abdul Malek, who was recently arrested for illegal accumulation of assets, is personally responsible for the alleged corruption, the Directorate of Health Education said on Wednesday.
In a press release, it clarified its position regarding its driver Malek following widespread criticism over how a driver had accumulated such huge wealth.
The directorate claimed that no purchase, appointment, posting, or promotion was made under it since its inception in November 2019 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
"So, Malek did not get involved in the alleged corruption during his job at the directorate," the release further said.
Professor Dr AHM Enayet Hussain joined as the directorate's first director general on December 12, 2019. Malek was sent on deputation to the directorate from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on January 1 this year, it added.
The directorate has no transport pool either, the press release said.
Malek, who was arrested on charges of possessing an illegal firearm and trading fake currencies, accumulated wealth worth crores of taka through illegal activities.
A Dhaka court placed him on a 14-day remand in two cases lodged under the Arms Act and the Special Powers Act.
The court granted the remand when police had produced him before it with a 14-day remand plea.
