Death toll from Sherpur floods rises to 9 as one more dies
The flood situation is expected to improve further in the coming days
The death toll from the ongoing floods in Sherpur has risen to nine after an eight-year-old girl drowned in flash floodwaters today (7 October) in the Koloshpar area of Nalitabari upazila.
The victim, Jinia Begum, daughter of Jamal Uddin from Gazirkhamar area in Sherpur Sadar, drowned after being swept away by the floodwaters while visiting her grandparents' house.
Md Masud Rana, Nalitabari Upazila Nirbahi Officer, confirmed the matter.
In the last four days, a total of nine people, including two women and a child, have died in three upazilas of Sherpur due to the flash floods.
Despite the loss of life, there has been some improvement in the overall flood situation, with water levels continuing to recede.
Md Nakibuzzaman Khan, executive engineer of the Water Development Board, said the Bhogai River at Nalitabari Bazar point was flowing 160 cm below the danger level, while the Chellakhali River at Batkuchi point was flowing 82cm below the danger level.
The flood situation is expected to improve further in the coming days, he said.
