A local Awami League leader has died after being attacked and injured by supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque in Chattogram's Rangunia.

The deceased is Mohammad Muhibullah, 54, leader of Kodala Union Awami League in Rangunia upazila.

He breathed his last at a private hospital in the city at around 12am on early Wednesday.

Rangunia Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anwar Hossain Shamim confirmed the matter to The Business Standard and said Muhibullah sustained injuries after the supporters of Mamunul Haque attacked him from a protest rally on Saturday.

Anwar Hossain further said two cases were filed at Rangunia Police Station in connection with the attack that day.

"Now the cases will be considered as murder cases. Police have started taking legal action against the accused," he added.
