Two people were killed in separate 'gunfights' with police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Khilgaon and Banani areas in the capital early Friday.

The deceased were identified as Billal Hossain alias ChapatiBillal, 29, and MdJalil, 45.

Zulfiqar Ali, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Khilgaon zone, told the Business Standard that police arrested Billal, an accused in 16 cases including those for robbery, mugging, drugs and attempted murder, from Goran area Thursday afternoon.

Later, police along with Billal went toShekerJayga area to arrest his accomplices. Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire at them, prompting them to fire back and triggering a "gunfight", which left Billal wounded with bullets.

Police recovered a pistol and a magazine from the spot.

In another incident, RAB-1 Operations Officer ASP Md Kamruzzaman said that some drugs dealers gathered at the Korail T&T field in Banani area early Friday.

"Sensing the presence of RAB members, the drug dealers opened fire at them, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, the gang fled the scene, leaving injured Jalil behind," he said.

A RAB member was also injured in the gunfight. Two foreign-made pistols, two magazines, 11 bullets, and 500 yaba pills were seized from the scene, he added.

He was accused in 16 narcotics cases with various police stations, the RAB official said.

The injured were separately rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared them dead.

The bodies have been kept DMC morgue for autopsy.
