Three culprits stole around Tk3 lakh in cash and nearly 500 bhori of gold ornaments from four shops in Rapa Plaza, including a jewellery store, in the early hours of Sunday.

The shops are – Rajlaxmi Jewellers, Gentle Park, Monsoon Rain and Vogue, Dhanmondi Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Ikram Ali Mia told The Business Standard, adding that the number of culprits involved was determined through CCTV footage.

Only the jewellery store was able to provide CCTV footage of the theft to the police, as the cameras installed in other shops had been disabled by their owners, police sources said.

OC Ikram added that the total amount of stolen goods will be assessed properly after the victims file a case over the crime.

Amit Saha, brother of the Rajlaxmi Jewellers' owner, said, "The theft took place around 2:30am on Sunday. A gang of three people broke into our shop, then stole the jewelleries and Tk2 lakh in cash. Some of the stolen gold ornaments belonged to our customers."

Amit added that the shop's CCTV managed to capture footage of the culprits in the act. "Two of them had covered their faces, while the other did not," he said.

In 2016, another gang had broken into Mitu Jewellery in Rapa Plaza and stole the gold inside.
