TCB onions in black market: 2 held, onion-loaded truck recovered

A team of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday arrested two people from Dhaka's Karwanbazar area in connection with selling government onions on the black market.

The arrestees are Ashaduzzaman (56) and Humayun Kabir (48). Ashaduzzaman is the owner of the Pear Enterprise while the identity of Humayun could not be known immediately.

The elite force of the Bangladesh Police recovered a truck (Dhaka metro N-11-8570) loaded with 1,364kg onions of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

Sarwar Bin Kashem, director (legal and media) of the RAB, said they had information that a group of businessmen were illegally selling TCB onions in Karwanbazar. "Based on the information, we conducted a drive and arrested the duo from the market."

He also said the duo collected onions from the TCB under the name of Pear Enterprise and were trying to sell them on the black market. "We recovered 1,364kg onions from their possession."

"They conserved onions illegally and tried to destabilise the market," Sarwar continued.

A case has been filed against them under the Special Powers Act, he added.

TCB spokesperson Md Humayan Kabir said steps will be taken against the two as per the TCB rules.

"We had no schedule for open market sale today [Friday]. We will investigate as to how they collected onions and were trying to sell them on the black market," he further said.
