Six police constables arrested for extortion in Chattogram
The arrestees, including a bodyguard of the City Police commissioner, were sent to jail on Sunday
Six police constables of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a contractor in the city's Anwara area on Sunday. They were sent to jail on the same day.
The arrestees are Morshed Billah, a bodyguard of CMP Commissioner Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, Md Masud, a bodyguard of CMP Deputy Commissioner Manzur Morshed, Md Abdul Nabi, Md Eskandar Hossain, Md Monirul Islam, and Md Shakil Khan.
Police sources said the accused constables were suspended and a departmental case has been filed against them.
SM Rashidul Haque, superintendent of Chattogram police, said, "Six police constables have been sent to jail in a case filed for extortion with Anwara police station. The matter is being investigated."
Abdul Mannan, a contractor from the village of Bairag in Anwara area filed the case last Sunday.
According to the case statement, two plainclothes man, claiming to be DB police members, picked up Mannan from his home at around 2am on 4 February. They took him to a place around 200ft far from his house, where six other men were waiting with motorcycles.
In total, eight men took him to a tea-stall in Patiya upazila, said the statement.
According to local and police sources, the accused threatened to kill Mannan and demanded Tk10 lakh. They called his family to bring the money to them. They also threatened to shoot him if his family tries to seek police help.
Mannan was later released after his relatives sent them Tk1,80,500 through mobile banking services.
