The government of Sheikh Hasina has taken a hard stance on irregularities and corruption, which has already become clear, said Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

Sheikh Hasina has proved that political identity cannot be a shield for any offender, he added.

Quader, also general secretary of the Awami League, made the remarks while briefing the media after exchanging views with officials of Gopalganj Road Zone, BRTC and BRTA through a videoconference from his residence on Sunday morning.

"The government has been conducting the ongoing drives against irregularities in the health and other sectors, alongside the anti-casino drive, on its own motion."

Mentioning that these drives will continue, the minister said, "Bangladesh became the world champion in corruption during the time of those who are talking about irregularities today. In addition to institutionalising corruption, the BNP has made itself known as a self-proclaimed corrupt party by abolishing the anti-corruption clause from the party constitution."

"The Sheikh Hasina government has not tried to save any criminal taking into consideration their political identity. The accused in Biswajit murder were not acquitted even in the name of the party. The accused have also been brought to justice in other cases including Abrar of BUET, Rifat Sharif of Barguna, Nursrat of Feni," said the Awami League general secretary.

He also questioned whether the BNP had been able to create such precedence during their tenure.

Earlier on the day, the minister said, "Seniority as well as efficiency would be assessed for promotion and posting of officials under the ministry."

He emphasised increasing the monitoring of the officers to maintain the quality of work and complete it on time.

The minister asked the authorities concerned to form an inquiry committee to probe road accidents and fatalities during the return journey after Eid. He said the committee has been asked to report within the next seven working days.

Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department Kazi Shahriar Hossain, Additional Secretary of Road Transport Highways Department Chandan Kumar Dey, Additional Chief Engineer Monir Hossain Pathan, Additional Chief Engineer of Gopalganj Road Zone Md Zakir Hossain, executive engineer of various road departments, and officials of the BRTC and the BRTA attended the videoconference.
