An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police has been suspended temporarily for allegedly raping a woman in a quarantine centre in Khulna Sadar.

The accused is Moklesur Rahman, ASI of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) prosecution division.

KMP Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Md Jahangir Alam confirmed the news to The Business Standard on Monday evening.

Police arrested Moklesur at noon soon after the victim had filed a case with Sadar police station against him on rape charges.

According to the case statement, on 13 May, the accused was on duty at institutional quarantine cantre in Primary Teachers Training Institute in Khulna Sadar from 1 am to 8 am.

During these hours, Moklesur entered the woman's room and raped her forcibly. The next night, he again tried to rape the woman but failed as she screamed for help.

Police found the incident true in initial investigation.

Moklesur was sent to jail after being produced before the court.

The woman is now undergoing treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre of Khulna Medical College Hospital, the official added.

The woman, 22, was sent to 14 days of institutional quarantine at the Primary Teachers Training Institute in Khulna Sadar after returning from India on 4 May, says the case statement.
