Nine arrested in Jisan murder case
On 9 December, college student Jisan was stabbed to death by muggers in Dhaka’s Abdullahpur area
Police have arrested nine people – all who are members of a snatching gang – in a case filed over the murder of college student Jisan Habib in the capital.
The arrestees are — Sumon, Sopan, Biplop, Tayeeb Ali, Jahangir Bapari, Tanvir Rahman, Nehal Jihad, Nurul Islam Rabbi, and Rakib.
From their procession, police also recovered the knife which was used in the murder, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP, Uttara Zone) Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shahidullah at a press briefing at Uttara East Police Station Thursday.
On 9 December night, Jisan Habib was stabbed to death by muggers at Abdullahpur area in the capital.
DC Shahidullah said police first identified two gang members by using modern tracking technology.
"Then cops conducted a drive and arrested Sumon aka Sundori Sumon and Sopan from Uttara and Tongi areas respectively on 12 December. Based on the information gleaned from them, police pinpointed the remaining gang members," he said.
Later, they were arrested in a coordinated raid in Dhaka's Uttara and Narsingdi district, the deputy commissioner said.
The gang used to snatch in Uttara area and police were now looking for another two members of the gang, the police official continued.
According to police, deceased Jisan was an Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) student who came to a relative's house in Dhaka from Noakhali on 28 November. On 9 December, he went to the Shahjalal International Airport to see off a relative there.
Later, he along with a relative was returning Dhamrai, an adjacent area of the capital, by bus. On the way, a mugger snatched away Jisan's mobile phone through the window of the bus.
Then Jisan and his relative chased down the mugger Jahangir Bapari. At that time, another member of the gang turned up to release Jahangir and the duo then managed to flee after stabbing Jisan.
