National Bank’s Tk80 lakh was stolen from the vehicle, not robbed

Tk80 lakh belonging to National Bank was stolen, not robbed from a vehicle, said investigation officers after interrogating two bank officers, the driver, two security guards, and examining CCTV footage.

Kotwali police sources said four bank officials were transporting some bags of money from Old Dhaka to the National Bank head office, and on the way, a bag containing Tk80 lakh went missing.

The police arrested the four employees and produced them at court, which granted one-day remand. After remand, as per the court directives, an executive officer, a driver, and two security guards were sent to jail.

During interrogation, they could not provide any information regarding the missing money.

According to the case statement and Kotwali Police Station, an officer, two armed security guards from National Bank head office in a secured vehicle collected money from different branches of Old Dhaka and started for the head office. On the way, when they reached Babu Bazar, the security guards started shouting that one of the bags, that contained Tk80 lakh, was missing.

Md Mizanur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said, "We have collected video footage from where they moved, and we are working on the footage. Very soon, you will get all information about the incident."

Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Lalbagh Division deputy commissioner Mustasirul Islam said the police were collecting information by utilising modern technology and from police sources.

Based on the initial investigation, it seems the money was not robbed. Someone stole the money while the four were not paying attention. The police are investigating if any of them was involved in the incident, he added.
