Mystery over Lakshmipur college boy Jabed’s death

Police have not been able to confirm if the death of Md Jabed Hossain, a student of Dalal Bazar College in Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila, was a murder or suicide, although his relatives, classmates and social media have been debating the matter.

According to police sources, the cause of death will be known after receiving the autopsy report.

However, different organisations have continued human chain programmes alleging that Jabed was murdered, and Jabed's father has lodged a complaint regarding the incident.

Earlier on Thursday (September 24) noon, police recovered the hanging body of Jabed from the residence of the grandparents of his girlfriend in Bijoynagar village of Sadar Upazila.

The next day, Jabed's father Saiful Islam lodged a complaint (1357) at the Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station alleging the murder of his son. He named six people, including Jabed's girlfriend, her father, mother, brother and maternal uncle, in the complaint.

Meanwhile, an image has surfaced on social media showing the body of a man hanging from a ceiling fan, and the bed is seen too close to the feet of the body. The social media users believe suicide was not possible in that way.

Jabed's father Saiful Islam said, Poly, a student of Lakhsmipur Pouro Ideal College and daughter of Md Selim of Purbo Hasondi village under the same union, and his son Jabed used to talk to each other on the phone.

Based on this information, on Thursday morning, the girl's brother Farhad, uncle Rubel Liton and some other people phoned Jabed and asked him to meet them at the residence of Poly's grandparents.

Saiful Islam alleges that after killing Jabed, they hung his body on the ceiling fan to mislead the investigation.

Among the accused, Poly's father Md Selim said that Jabed tried to convince Poly to run away with him. But as Poly rejected the plan, Jabed committed suicide, he added.

He also denied that any of them were involved in the incident.

"We are investigating if this is a murder or a suicide. It will be clear after getting the autopsy report," said AKM Azizur Rahman Miah, officer-in-charge of Lakhsimur Sadar Model Police Station.
