The Ministry of Education has formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the gang-rape incident at MC College in Sylhet. The committee has been directed to submit a preliminary report within three days and a final report within seven days.

The Ministry of Education on Monday issued a notification in this regard.

The notification said a committee has been formed with the Ministry of Education officials to investigate the recent incident on the campus of Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet and send a report with recommendations to determine whether there was any shortcoming in the management of the college authorities and determine the responsibilities of all concerned.

The committee is made up of Director (College and Administration), Department of Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka, Deputy Director (College), Secondary and Higher Education Sylhet Region, Sylhet and Assistant Director (College-1), Department of Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka.

It is alleged that on Friday afternoon, a couple from South Surma in Sylhet went to visit MC College. Five to six leaders and activists of Chhatra League grabbed them, brought them to the dormitory, and beat them up both. Later, they tied her husband and raped her in front of him.

The next day, the victim's husband filed a case against nine people at the city's Shahparan police station, naming six people. All the six accused are Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.

The victim is currently admitted to the OCC centre of Osmani Hospital in Sylhet.

The accused in the case filed by the young woman's husband are: Tarekul Islam Tarek, 28, son of Rafiqul Islam of Umednagar in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila; Mahbubur Rahman Rony, 25, son of Jahangir Miah of Bagunipara of Habiganj Sadar; Arjun Laskar, 25, son of Kanu Laskar of Atgram in Zakiganj; Rabiul Islam, 25, of Barangadipur (Jagdal) village of Diraiupazila and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25, of Gachbari village of Kanaighat.

Meanwhile, on Monday and Tuesday the court remanded six accused in the case for five days.
