The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a gang of swindlers, who cheated many people and illegally earned a lot of money using social media platforms - Likee and Bigo live.

"They were detained during a drive today in the capital," said Azad Rahman, additional superintendent of police, CID.

A Chinese national, involved with the racket, was also detained from Karwan Bazar, said an official from Cyber Police Centre of CID.

Each of the detained swindlers used to amass around Tk50 lakh a month illegally from the platforms, said a source in CID.

CID will hold a press conference at 12pm on Sunday to brief on the detention.

Likee is a short video creation and sharing app, and Bigo Live is a live streaming platform.

Both apps are owned by Singapore-based BIGO Technology, which was founded in 2014 by David Li and Jason Hu.
