Joint forces arrest 'top drug trader' Sajib, 4 others in Khulna
Joint forces have arrested five people, including a "top drug trader" named Sajib Islam, in Khulna today (7 October).
During an operation based on a tip-off, led by the police, Navy and the Department of Narcotics Control, they were arrested from Chanmari and Rupsha areas of the city this morning, said Navy Lt Commander Samuel Ahmed Khan Adit.
The other arrestees are Faiz Rabbi, Yakub Molla, Ziarul Islam Nirob, and Jamila Begum.
Contacted, Khulna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Munir-ul-Gias said the arrestees will be handed over to the police station after the joint forces' drive is over.
During the drive, the joint forces seized three rounds of blank cartridge ammunition, over a thousand pieces of yaba pills, Tk1.76 lakh in cash, 21 mobile phones, a laptop, and five CCTV cameras, among other things.
According to sources, there are eleven cases against Sajib in different police stations. His brother Ashiq Islam is reportedly the head of a gang called 'Ashiq Group' in the city. The notorious group is listed in the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) special branches.
On 1 August 2023, RAB arrested Sajib in possession of 9,350 yaba pills. RAB said the gang smuggled large quantities of drugs from Chattogram and sold them in Khulna. Sajib was later released from jail. Sajib allegedly controls his brother Ashiq's business.
Ashiq was accused in a murder case on 6 September 2018 and allegedly involved in terrorist activities. There are five cases against him in different police stations. He is currently absconding. There are 23 members in his team who have a total of 110 cases in their name
