Five more held over Lalmonirhat mob lynching

Police have arrested five more people in connection with the grisly murder of a man on allegation of hurting religious sentiment at Burimari of Lalmonirhat's Patgram upazila.

With the latest arrest, ten people have been arrested in three cases filed over the incident, said Sumanta Kumar Mohonta, officer-in-charge of Patgram Police Station on Monday morning, Somoy TV reports.

Earlier, police arrested five people over the incident. They were shown arrested in the cases on Sunday.

Later, the arrestees were produced before the court by Mahmudunnabi, inspector of the Detective Branch of Police and also the investigation officer of the cases seeking five-day remand.

On Thursday evening, locals of Lalmonirhat's Burimari beat and burned Shahidunnabi Jewel, a former employee of Rangpur Cantonment Public School, to death on allegation that he hurt Muslim religious sentiment.

Later, three cases were filed with the police station over the shocking incident.

A total of 50 named and some unnamed people were made accused in a case filed by police on allegation of vandalizing government property and obstructing law enforcers from discharging duties.

The chairman of Burimari Union Parishad filed another case against 22 named and some unknown people for carrying out sabotage activities at the Parishad complex.

Meanwhile, Saiful Islam, a cousin of deceased Jewel, filed a murder case with the police station.

More than 100 people have so far been identified to be involved in the incident.
