A Chattogram court has issued arrest warrants for Fatikchhari women's reserved seat MP Khadijatul Anwar Sony's husband Parvez Alam and father-in-law Shah Alam for embezzling Tk15 crore from One Bank Limited.
Chattogram Money Loan Court's Magistrate Mujahidur Rahman passed the order on Thursday, instructing the local police station to arrest the accused and produce them before the court.
Court sources said Parvez Alam took out Tk15.5 crore in loan from One Bank's Khatunganj branch in the name of M/S Shaon Enterprise to import consumer goods.
But, the accused did not take cognizance of several notices issued by the bank authorities to repay the loan. Later, the bank authorities moved the court.
In 2016, the Money Loan Court passed an order in favour of the bank. The bank authorities then filed a case seeking issuance of decree against the accused. But the accused did not repay the loan even after the court order.
In this situation, on 28 March this year, the bank authorities applied to the court to issue an arrest warrant against the accused.
In the appeal, the bank authorities mentioned that the bank had requested the accused to reach a compromise at different times.
But the accused was trying to leave the country. If the arrest warrant is issued against the accused, there is a possibility of recovery of the loan.
Following this appeal, the court issued arrest warrants against the accused.
Shah Alam, father-in-law of MP Sony, allegedly fled the country two years ago for Malaysia after embezzling Tk300 crore from eight banks. However, his family sources have confirmed that he had returned to the country a few days ago and is currently staying in Dhaka.
Court sources said eight banks currently have 54 cases against Shah Alam. Of these, seven cases were filed with Money Loan Court and verdicts have been passed in four cases.
All the rest are check fraud cases filed under the NI Act. He has been sentenced to six years in six NI Act cases.
There are allegations that though Shah Alam, the proprietor of M/S Alam & Company at Sadarghat in Chattogram, was not any prominent businessman, he managed to take loans from different banks year after year.
He used political influence to get loans. Taking loan for business, he bought lands with that money.
His son Parvez Alam is currently looking after his businesses.
