Members of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) detained three employees of Chattogram Port along with 168 blank checks, prize bonds and cash Tk25,58,400 from in front of Sonali Bank's Chattogram Port branch on Sunday evening.

The detainees were Delwar Hossain, 48, Abdul Mannan, 52, and Md Abul Kalam, 52.

A senior NSI official, seeking anonymity, told The Business Standard, "The NSI had information that the three employees of the Chattogram Port arrange bank loans through bribery and do the illegal business of giving loans to different members of the port on interest. On the basis of the information, the employees were held from in front of the bank with cash Tk25,58,400, 168 blank checks, 30 prize bonds worth Tk100 each and three deposits worth Tk18 lakh."

The NSI official said that although it was initially decided to hand over the three detainees to police, they were released after the Chattogram Port Authority assured them of taking departmental action against them.

Md Omar Faruk, secretary of Chattogram Port Authority, said, "Departmental action will be taken against the three employees of Chattogram Port, who were detained with cash."
