2 neo-JMB members arrested in capital

A team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit has arrested two members of FZ Force, a sleeper cell of militant organisation neo-JMB, who allegedly planned to kill influential politicians and rich atheists.

The arrestees are Saffat Islam alias Abdullah alias William alias Al Arsalan alias Mehemed Chagri Baig, 18, and Yasir Arafat alias Shanto, 20.

They were arrested from Sadarghat area in Dhaka during a raid at around 6:55pm on Monday.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Walid Hossain confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

CTTC sources said Saffat and Yasir are members of the military wing of neo-JMB. They formed a sleeper cell with seven to eight members and named it FZ Force.

Saffat from his residence at Elephant Road in Dhaka and Yasir from Keraniganj were trying to conduct military training and recruit members.

Their primary target was to kill influential politicians and rich atheists, sources said.

To execute the plan, they were trying to obtain firearms and make bombs.

Social media was their primary source for communication alongside other online networking apps, according to CTTC sources.
