The Tangail court rejected Shariat Bayati’s last bail petition on January 29 and sent him to jail
The High Court has issued a rule asking authorities to explain why Shariat Bayati, who was arrested from Tangail, should not be granted bail.
An HC bench comprised of Justice Md Emdadul Haque and Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury issued a two week rule on Wednesday, February 12.
Baul Shariat Bayati, 35 of Agdholla village of Mirzapur upazila in Tangail went to a Baul song concert in Dhamrai upazila in Dhaka on December 24 last year. There he made some remarks about Islam and the Quran in the Pala songs.
People of his area saw the Youtube video of him making the comments. They alleged that it hurt their religious sentiments and started protesting demanding his trial.
A Muslim cleric named Mawlana Faridul Islam of Agdholla village filed a case in this regard on January 9 in Mirzapur Police Station. In the case lodged under digital security act, it was alleged that Shariat hurt the religious sentiments.
Police arrested Shariat Bayati from Mymensingh's Bhaluka area and produced him before a Tangail Judicial Magistrate Court. The court granted a 3-day remand after the police requested a 10-day remand for questioning him.
The Tangail court rejected Shariat Bayati's last bail petition on January 29 and sent him to jail.
