Why land acquisition for Kalapara power plant not illegal: High Court

The High Court has issued a ruling, asking the authorities concerned to explain why acquisition of land for the 1,320MW power plant in Patuakhali's Kolapara should not be declared illegal.

A bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the ruling today following a writ petition.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua stood for the petition.

The government is trying to acquire one thousand acres of farmland for the construction of a 'Super Power Plant' in Champapur Union of the Kalapara area.

Local people do not want to sell their land and have filed a writ petition at court to stop the government from acquiring their land.

Farid Talukder filed the writ to stop the government from acquiring 289.31 acres of his farmland which is under cultivation.

"The local administration showed that it is agricultural land, the law says acquisition of agricultural land is prohibited. That is why we filed the writ," said Farid.
