TV show director Rinku gets bail in student murder case
A Dhaka court has granted bail to television director Rafat Mozumder Rinku in a murder case of a college student during the quota reform protests on 19 July.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman passed the order today (26 September) after a hearing.
The defence sought his bail on the grounds that Rinku's name was not included in the first information report (FIR) and claimed that the case was filed to "harass" him.
They also claimed that he never held any post of the Chhatra League (BCL).
The prosecution, however, opposed the bail plea, stating that Rinku was present on the scene of the murder and he was found directly involved.
Earlier on 23 September, police arrested Rinku in a murder case filed with the police station over the death of Naimur Rahman, a 22-year-old student of Gulshan Degree College, during the July uprising.
Naimur was fatally shot on 19 July during the nationwide Anti-Discrimination Student Movement protests, according to the case statement.
His father Khalilur Rahman lodged a case over the killing on 12 September, accusing 64 identified individuals, including Rinku and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with 400 to 500 unidentified people.
Meanwhile, people from the entertainment industry have expressed their shock upon hearing the news of Rinku's detention. Figures such as Ashfaque Nipun have voiced their opinions against his arrest on social media.
