Local companies to be recognized as citizens: HC
Dispatches several other directives
The High Court (HC) on Monday declared local companies as Bangladeshi citizens that would enjoy all the fundamental rights given to all citizens of the country under the constitution.
After hearing a writ petition by a Bangladeshi national, HC bench, constituted of Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md. Ashraful Kamal, passed the verdict. Barrister Imtiaz Moinul Islam stood for the writ petitioner.
In another verdict, the court declared that the foreign buyers operating under the Alliance should discuss with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) regarding the way to end business relations with any garment manufacturing company.
The court also declared the existing protocol of Alliance Apparel, the North American garments buyers’ forum, as illegal. The court further directed to devise new safety regulations for garment factories that would help develop relationship with the Alliance.
The Alliance and its signatory North American Buyers’ Forum were asked to formulate a proper ‘escalation protocol’ in collaboration with the government of Bangladesh and BGMEA.
Earlier in 2017, a Bangladeshi company, BHIS Apparels Ltd, filed a writ petition, challenging the alliance's decision in 2016 to suspend the business of Alliance Apparel.
