HC: Form committee to protect Halda river biodiversity, dolphins
The court has set May 28 as the date for giving the next order in this regard

The High Court has directed the environment department to form a committee to protect the natural environment, biodiversity, carp-like mother fish and dolphins of the Halda River.
The 14-member committee named Halda River Dolphin Killing Prevention, Natural Environment, Biodiversity and All Types of Mother Fish Protection Committee will be headed by Chattogram deputy commissioner as per the court directive.
The virtual high court bench of Justice Obaidul Hasan passed the order on Tuesday in the wake of a report filed by the environment department on the killing of dolphins in the Halda River.
The order further said that the members of parliament from the area on the banks of the river will act as advisers to the committee, and the committee will conduct necessary activities as per their advice.
The court has set May 28 as the date for giving the next order in this regard.
Earlier, in the wake of a writ petition filed by Barrister Abdul Qayyum Liton, the High Court's virtual bench directed the director of the Chattogram environment department to take necessary steps to stop the inhumane killing of dolphins in the Halda River on May 12.
The court also directed the environment department to execute the order within the next 72 hours and send the report through email.
