Eight jailed in Jatrabari murder case

A Dhaka court sentenced eight people to 10-year imprisonment each for murdering a woman in Dhaka's Jatrabari area in 2015.

The court also fined them Tk20,000 each, to suffer one-year imprisonment in default.

The convicts are -- Sajedul Islam Sazal, Sohagh Sharif, Sakib Hasan Sizar, Merazul Sheikh alias Mizan, Anwar Hossain alias Hridoy, Shah Imam Hossain Rony, Masud Shah and Sagar Hawlader.

Judge Shahidul Islam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-7 pronounced the judgment. All the accused except Sazal were tried in absentia.

According to the case statement, the victim Sayeda Sabekun Nahar Nigar, 35, used to live with her parents at their Jatrabari residence. Two of the convicts -- Sazal and Masud — rented an apartment of the residence in 2015 as private university students.
On May 22, 2015, the duo entered Nigar's flat in name of informing about electricity issues.

Six others also followed them and tied hands and legs of landlady Tohura Begum to loot the house. As Nigar started screaming in a bid to resist the robbery, they hit her with sharp weapon first and later strangled her to death.

Subsequently, the deceased's mother Tohura Begum filed the case with Jatrabari Police Station.

On December 29, 2015, police submitted charge sheet against the eight. The court on February 7, 2017, framed charges against the accused.
