Convicted rapist remarries wife in prison after 20 years

A convicted rapist, Islam, remarried his wife, Mala Begum, at the Jessore Central Jail on July 31.

Their 19-year-old son Milon was also present during the wedding, which was ordered by the Supreme Court (SC), following which Islam was ordered to be released on August 1.

Falling in love in their youth, Mala and Islam got secretly married on February 13, 2000, in Jhenidah, Lakshmipur. Their son Milon was born on January 21, 2001.

Later, Islam denied the guardianship of Milon and also refused to recognize Mala as his wife.

Mala’s father then filed a rape case against Islam and a lower court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Islam filed an appeal with the High Court (HC) but the court upheld the lower court’s order. Then Islam filed another appeal in the SC, but the court again upheld the HC order.

Finally, Islam filed a review petition in the Appellate Division of SC.

A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division of SC led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain ordered to release Islam on bail following a review petition filed by the accused.

Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal appeared for the accused in the court.

He informed the court that Milon is the son of Islam which is proved by a DNA test and as per the court order, both Islam and Mala had remarried on July 31.

The Appellate Division then ordered to release Islam on bail. The Supreme Court of Appeal ordered to informed the progress on the matter on August 25.
