Children trafficking: SC stays bail of ex-DIG Anisur’s wife

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday stayed a High Court (HC) order that had granted bail to the wife of Md Anisur Rahman, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police.

Anisur Rahman's wife Anwara Rahman was sentenced to life imprisonment for keeping seven children under her custody for trafficking them.

A seven-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order.

Advocate Moniruzzaman Asad stood for the accused while Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state.

According to the prosecution, the couple -- Md Anisur Rahman (then DIG) and Anwara Rahman -- used to take children from their parents, hospitals or clinics for trafficking to foreign countries.

Human rights activist Advocate Alena Khan filed a case over the matter in 2006.

On April 18, 2012, a lower court awarded life imprisonment to the couple.

Later, the HC granted bail to Anwara after she filed a bail plea.
