The Appellate Division will pass verdict on January 14 on former Minister Syed Mohammed Kaiser's appeal petition, filed challenging the death penalty awarded for his involvement in crimes against humanity during the liberation war.
A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain completed the hearing on the appeal today.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state while advocates Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and SM Md Shahjahan stood for Kaiser.
On December 23, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Kaisar to death along with 22 years in jail for war crimes. Later, he appealed against the verdict.
Kaisar built a special force group named, "Kaisar Bahini" to carry out atrocities in Habiganj in 1971. The charges against him include rape, extortion, massacre and torture.
He joined HM Ershad's Jatiya Party and later became the Minister for State for Agriculture under the military dictator's regime.
