2 more universities fined for enrolling extra students

The Appellate Division on Sunday fined two private universities Tk 10 lakh each for enrolling law students ignoring directives of the University Grants Commission and the Bar Council.

The universities are – International Islamic University Chattogram and Metropolitan University of Sylhet.

An Appellate bench, headed by Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, passed the order.

The students of both universities will get the opportunity to sit for the exam only after the institutions pay the fine to Bar Council.

Earlier, On Thursday, the court summoned vice chancellors of the both universities.

Senior lawyer A Y Moshiuzzaman stood for Bar Council while senior lawyer Joynul Abedin and lawyer EBM Altaf Hossain represented the universities.

Several students of the universities filed separate writ petitions challenging the decision of Bar Council to not allow them take exams. The High Court issued a rule and an interim order allowing the students to take Bar Council exam.

Bar Council moved the Appellate Division against the order but the plea was initially scrapped, prompting the council to seek a review. The top court later resolved the review petition and fined the universities.
