A Khulna court on Sunday convicted 16 people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in a case filed in connection with killing Gopalganj Municipal Awami League Senior Vice-President Asaduzzaman alias Titu Sharif.

District and Sessions Judge Md Nazrul Islam Hawladar of the Speedy Trial Tribunal of Khulna handed down the verdict today.

The court also fined them Tk5000 each, by default, they have to serve one-year rigorous imprisonment.

Among the convicted, four remain absconding.

Meanwhile, the court also acquitted 15 other accused in the case.

According to prosecution, the convicted people attacked Asaduzzaman while he was passing the Shinghati village area of Narail district riding on a motorcycle and hacked him to death over a land dispute on 1 July 2018.

Ashiquzzaman Sharif, younger brother of the deceased, then filed a case with Naragati police station accusing 18 people and 10-12 unidentified persons.

The investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Naragati Police Station Nimai Chandra Mandal, filed a charge sheet against 31 people on 24 July, 2019.

During the trial, 31 out of 36 witnesses testified.
