The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has sought details of bank accounts of Rajshahi University (RU) proctor Dr Lutfor Rahman, assistant registrar Md Mamunur Rashid, and former president of the Chhatra League's RU unit, Ibrahim Hossain Moon, and their wives.
NBR has asked banks to provide all updated information from 1 July, 2014, on transactions and other details of the six persons within seven days, according to a letter sent by NBR's central intelligence cell.
The NBR letter asked banks to provide information on any kind of individual, joint, or business accounts, including FDRs and SDTs of the five, any current or savings accounts, loan schemes, credit cards, lockers or vaults, savings bonds, investment schemes or deposit schemes, or any other accounts.
Earlier on 24 May, the NBR contacted different banks seeking details of the accounts of Prof Abdus Sobhan, the most recent past vice chancellor of RU, and his family members.
According to sources, proctor professor Dr Lutfar Rahman, assistant registrar Mamun-ur-Rashid, and former president of RU BCL, Ibrahim Hossain, were close associates of former VC Professor Abdus Sobhan.
Of the controversial 137 recruited by former VC Prof Sobhan for jobs at the university, Ayesha Siddiqua, wife of the former RU BCL president, was appointed resident teacher of Monnujan Hall.
Farhanul Islam, brother of the assistant registrar, was also appointed in the mass recruitment.
After investigating the allegations against Prof Sobhan regarding irregularities, corruption and appointment scams, a government appointed committee submitted a full report to the education ministry on 23 May.
Abdus Sobhan appointed 137 persons to various posts, including nine teachers, on 6 May, the last day of his tenure.
VC Prof Sobhan deliberately amended the recruitment policy of the university and illegally recruited 34 more teachers, including his daughter-in-law.
The inquiry committee has recommended cancellation of a total of 175 appointments terming these appointments illegal.
