Demanding bribes during audit: 2 arrested red-handed in ACC operation
Two members of the audit team demanded bribes from officials of the Pirojpur District Primary Education Office
Two people were arrested in Pirojpur for demanding bribes in an operation conducted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in response to a complaint.
The two arrestees – Audit and Accounts Officer Mohammad Shamim Hossain and SAS Superintendent Mohammad Zaheer Raihan – were arrested on Monday, said ACC director Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya.
According to the ACC, the members of the audit team demanded bribes from the officials of the Pirojpur District Primary Education Office. The victims then complained to the ACC Complaints Center (Hotline-106) that they were being forced to pay bribes.
Upon receiving the complaint, the ACC Enforcement Unit immediately directed its Barisal Integrated District Office to conduct a drive regarding the complaint.
In this regard, a team led by Debabrata Mandal, Deputy Director, Barisal District Office, raided the office and residences of the members of the audit team.
In the presence of neutral witnesses, the ACC team recovered Tk4.16 lakh in cash from the rest house in Pirojpur where the audit team memberswere staying.
Mohammad Shamim Hossain and Mohammad Zaheer Raihan could not explain the source of the money and were arrested.
The ACC surmised that the money was taken as bribes and have also received evidence in this regard. A case is being filed.
