Just after being announced winner unofficially, a BNP-backed councillor candidate has been killed in an attack allegedly carried out by the ruling party activists in Sirajganj municipality on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Tarikul Islam, 45, son of Abdul Kuddus. He succumbed to his injuries around 8pm at a private hospital of the district town.
Md Golam Mustafa, officer-in-charge of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed the matter.
"A turf war took place between the followers of the winning councillor candidate Tarikul Islam (Dalim) and his opponent Shahadat Hossain Buddin, general secretary of ward-6 Awami League. At one stage, Tarikul was stabbed," the OC said, adding that he was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to tackle any further clash.
