The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been put on high alert to prevent rawhide smuggling after the Eid-ul-Azha, during which Muslims sacrifice animals.

BGB has intensified patrolling in the bordering area of Benapole.

This year, the government fixed raw cowhide price at Tk 35-40 per square foot in the capital and Tk 28-32 outside Dhaka. Meanwhile, the prices of goatskins were fixed at Tk 13-15 per square foot while that of she-goat at Tk 10-12.

Sources said the BGB has strengthened security in Benapole, Putkhali in Sharsha, Goga, Kaiba, Agrabhulot, Rudrapur, Doulatpur, Gatipara, Ghiba, Sadipur, Boro Achra, Kashipur and Raghunathpur bordering areas.

The seasonal rawhide traders have stockpiled rawhides after purchasing those at a high price.

According to traders, the quality of Bangladeshi rawhide is better than that of India and that's why there is a demand for Bangladeshi rawhide in India.

Mamun Khan, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station, said the law enforcement agencies are working to prevent smuggling of goods including rawhides.
