Ishrat Jahan Chowdhury, wife of bank official Abdul Morshed Chowdhury, has claimed that her husband committed suicide after receiving death threats from Russell, a leader of the central Juba League.

She also demanded immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment to those responsible for the suicide of her husband at a press conference held in Chattogram city on Sunday.

Nur Nahar, mother of the deceased bank official, elder brother Abdul Arshad Chowdhury, daughter Mobashera Jum and some other members of the family were present at the press conference.

Earlier on 7 April, police recovered the hanging body of Abdul Morshed Chowdhury, manager of Bank Alfalah Agrabad branch, from a flat in Nahar Bhaban in the Hill view residential area in the port city.

At the press conference, Ishrat Jahan said‍ her husband took a loan of Tk25 crore from his two cousins, Jabed Iqbal Chowdhury and Parvez Iqbal Chowdhury, and Syed Shakib Naeem Uddin, a resident of Panchlaish area from 2011 to 2018 for business purpose. Till 2018, Abdul Morshed Chowdhury also paid Tk38 crore including interest against this loan.

''But the creditors were creating mental pressure on him as well as threatening politically to realise more money unjustly. Because of the unethical pressure of the quarter, my husband committed suicide. My husband had made these allegations in the suicide note,'' Ishrat Jahan claimed.

She further said Syed Shakib took a sign forcibly from my husband in 84 cheques at gunpoint on 27 September 2019 without returning those which were given as guaranty of the loan even after receiving the extra money. They also have six unwritten and signed non-judicial stamps.

Ishrat Jahan Chowdhury said, "In May 2018, my husband was taken to MM Tower in Panchlaish and physically abused. I was also tied up and forced to sign a stamp, to give an additional Tk12 crore."

Ishrat Jahan Chowdhury said, "We are awfully helpless due to the financial and political influence of the accused."

A case was filed in 2019 over an attack on our house. A case has also been filed in the court regarding the cheques grabbed by the accused, she added.

The elder brother of deceased Abdul Morshed, on 8 April, filed a case with the Panchlaish Police Station accusing four people over committing suicide of his brother.

The accused are Jabed Iqbal and Parvez Iqbal, Shakib Naeem Uddin and Shahidul Haque Chowdhury Russell, the organising secretary of the Central Juba League.

However, mobile phones of the accused Pervez Iqbal, Jabed Iqbal and Shakib were found switched off when this correspondent tried to contact them.
