Medical staff in Chattogram stage protest over termination

At least 100 people are staging demonstration in front of Chattogram's Bangladesh Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital (BBMH) gate on Sunday over the termination of 34 medical personnel including 19 nurses.

The protestors took their position in front of the hospital gate from 10am till the report was filed at 2pm.

Earlier on April 8, the hospital authorities issued a termination notice mentioning the names of 19 nurses and 15 medical personnel.

"We have been working here for a long time, but the authorities suddenly fired us in this crisis time. So, we were protesting against the decision," a protestor, Rehana Akhter said.

USTC Employees Union President, Md Manik Mia said, "The hospital authorities had deliberately terminated 34 people ignoring the rules and regulations. Besides, many other employees have been transferred to different places without promotion. We have started the movement for those unethical decision taken by the authorities."

"Our movement will continue util the dismissal order is revoked," he further added.

When contacted, BBMH Deputy Director Nasir Uddin said, "A meeting is underway with the workers. Decision would be made after that."
