Two people were killed in a mob lynching on suspicion of robbery in Habiganj district.

The incident took place at a haor near Gunipur village in Lakhai upazila of the district.

Lakhai Police Station Officer-in-charge Saidul Islam confirming the deaths said, "The bodies were recovered from the haor and sent to the morgue of Habiganj Sadar Hospital."

The deceased were identified as Humayun, 40, of Puraikala village under Madhabpur upazila of the district and Abdul Hamid, 42, of Dharmandal village under Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district.

Villagers said, a group consisting of 9 -10 robbers raided Jalal Miah's house in Gunipur village around 3 am on Saturday.

At that time, when Jalal called the people of the area through his mobile phone, the villagers went out to catch the robbers with local weapons.

Other members of the robber group fled the scene sensing the mob but Hamid and Humayun were caught by them in the haor. They died on the spot when the agitated crowd beat them.
