10 injured as police charge baton on human chain for Sifat’s release

Police today baton charged on a human chain demanding the release of Shahedul Islam Sifat who was arrested after the killing of Major (retired) Sinha Mohammad Rashed by police firing in Cox's Bazar.

At least 10 people were injured during the incident.

Sifat's classmates organised the human chain in Barguna's Bamna at 12 pm on Saturday.

"Suddenly a team of police came and snatched the banner of the peaceful human chain. After that, Bamna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Ilias Hossain came to the place and started threatening the participants and instructed his force to charge with sticks," said Rubel, a participant of the human chain.

Meanwhile, Bamna Police Station OC Mohammad Ilias Hossain termed the participants as miscreants.

"They were carrying out the human chain without permission. We have stopped them as it would tarnish the image of the government," he added.

Major (retired) Sinha had been in Cox's Bazar with the students for making a documentary film.

Shahedul Islam Sifat, who had been accompanying Major Sinha on last Friday night from Teknaf to Cox's Bazar, claimed Sinha's murder looked like it was pre-meditated.
